On Friday afternoon it looked like the Balloon Festival was going to be over before it began. I showed up around 2:45 to check out our digs. Almost immediately the rain and wind began ripping through the tent. All of us held onto one of the tent posts in the hopes that we could stop the tent from blowing away! We were successful in keeping the tent intact, but it appears that others weren’t quite as lucky. Both of the Margarita tents appeared to have been destroyed. You can read an article about the storm here.
I left the festival around four as it was clearing up. I hope that business improved as we had only sold about six sandwiches by the time I left. At least it’s nicer today!!!
Although it stormed like crazy on Friday, we still managed to make a good amount of sales. Nothing can stop us!! hehe. Volunteering at the Balloon Festival on Friday and Saturday was difinitely a fun experience. The second I came in I was befriended by the tent staff and volunteers. I met a lot of wonderful people from all over. Everytime you needed help, someone was right there behind you to lend you a hand. Although Saturday evening was extremely busy, PTK volunteers had a blast…especially making them cheese-steaks. (I will never look at a cheese-steak the same way again…right Cheryl??? haha.) Overall, the 2006 Balloon Fest was an amazing fellowship event. Great team work guys!!! Oh and as for the people I met, we will definitely keep in touch =)

The balloon festival was an experience. I did not experience the high winds and rain but I did get to enjoy the mud it left behind (my car is covered, but it was definitely fun driving in it). I loved the fireworks but unfortunately I don’t remember what night they happened.
Friday- I got there at five and sales did pick up but not as much as Saturday. All the people I met there were extremely nice and a little crazy but who isn’t these days. I was cashier the first day which you would think is easy but the inability to leave your money and to have the hot sun beating on your head makes it a little challenging. The worst part was that I had to wait for finance at night instead of being able to help everyone clean up. All I could do was just sit there and stare. But my highlight of the day was when I was able to get free ice cream when they were closing down next to us.
Saturday- Sales were booming. I got there are four and business was pretty much what it was at the peak on Friday. I started on the gyro’s and I was very bad at it for a while, now I make a mean gyro and I have Steph and the folding guy(I don’t remember his name) to thank for that. Then it happened I was moved to cheese steaks! Yea it was crazy from then on and I need to give a big thank you and I love you and I could not have done it without you to Tanya, Eric and Cheryl! We kicked butt! The balloons were beautiful my favorite was Curious George and the luminary at night was also very beautiful. I was hurting that night, the legs were just not happy with me and I definitely went home took a shower and passed out!
Sunday- HOT!!! In my opinion I think Sunday was the hottest day out of all three. Business was okay and we found out that day that we were only getting money for the cheese steak stand and that kinda put a damper on the whole gung-ho get it done tactic. I taught Steve how to flip a mean cheese steak and I must say he is now the “Master of the Cheese Steak.” I was able to talk more Sunday because we were all on one booth and I found that to be rewarding, although I felt we were better utilized in two different stands.
Overall good time, hard work, hot days, lots of water, no more cheese steaks!, gyro’s were okay because you didn’t inherit the smell, lots of free food, wish they had running water, loved the balloons, loved Curious George, loved the fire works, loved the people, would do it again, next time we need to go for two booths!!

So I’m a bit slow. Never, EVER, again do I want to see a Cheese steak. Actually my son and I had a blast. We were worn out by the end of the day and then began the REAL adventure. After working in the heat allllll day long, we both forgot where the car was parked. Of course my car doesn’t have the clicker to help me find it so we wandered around and around the parking lot (in mud up to…) All around us people were clicking their clicker and lights and horns were going off all over. I think it took longer to find the car than to get home. We both fell asleep immediately after showering. I felt bad about missing the next day, but I had to wait until the plane took off before I could leave the airport and we all know how reliable airline schedules can be. Fellowship with this group of officers and wonderful advisors (YAY Maria) is something I look forward to this year. Thanks again Steve for putting it all together.
