The Living Wage and the RVCC Campaign

LIVING WAGE—The phrase “living wage” refers to wages that are legally required by towns and some colleges for local workers who are employees of outside companies. Living wage rates generally run between $9 and $12 per hour, higher than minimum wages ($5.15 to $7 per hour, depending on the state) and lower than union wages.

BUILDING SERVICES AT RVCC—At RVCC, the custodian, security guards, and cafeteria staff all work for outside companies that the College holds contracts with; the current contracts expire in 2008 and 2009 and may be extended or renewed, or new companies may be hired. Most workers in these three positions earn around $8 or $9 per hour and do not receive health benefits unless they pay for them. In general, the College does not pay attention to the wages of these workers because wages are not part of the contract that the College signs with the company to do the work.

RVCC’S LIVING WAGE PROPOSAL—Our proposal to the College President, Dr. Crabill, asks the Board of Trustees to pass resolutions requiring that at the next contract starting date, these workers who are full-time be paid $10.15 or $11.15 per hour (depending on their position) and get health benefits. If no health benefits are included, they are to receive $2 per hour more.
These amounts are calculated as dollars above the New Jersey minimum wage, currently $7.15. When the state minimum wage goes up in the future, these wages will go up also.
The proposal also calls for the formation of a Wage Board consisting of representatives from different areas of the College (including students) to monitor the paying of these wages.

WAGES IN THE SOMERSET COUNTY AREA—Custodians and security guards in this area earn around $11.00 per hour as an average. The average for the various types of cafeteria and kitchen workers ranges from $8 to $11.

THE RVCC LIVING WAGE CAMPAIGN—The proposal, signed by student and staff leaders, will be sent to the President who will then bring it to the Board. The College community will need to show support through such events as a card-writing campaign. Negotiations will probably take place. Hopefully, students, faculty, and others can stay supportive long enough for an agreement to be reached. The proposal will cost money, so it is unrealistic to expect the Board to agree easily or right away.

Donations Still Needed for Halloween Party

Hello to all!!

Just a note to let you know that we have confirmed donations for the
following:
Chips & Pretzels
1 -2 liter of Sprite (Still need 2 more)
1 -2 liter of Orange (Still need more)
1 large bag of Spider webs (Still need 1 more)
8 rolls of toilet paper (Still need 28 more)
3 bags of candy (Still need 5-7 more large bags)

- scary movies (make sure you label your movie)
-anything else that would be good decorations (I.e. skeletons, motion
activated witches or bats, etc.)
-prizes I.e. gift cards etc. Solicitations are in the office (10 points
per donation)

Whatever you can do to help would be wonderful! There is a sign up
sheet on the bulletin board under the Halloween Flyer. Please feel free
to drop stuff off in the big blue box by the file cabinet. Just make
sure to sign for it on the sheet.

Induction Ceremony Meeting/Point Opportunities

On OCTOBER 20, 2006, FRIDAY, we are going to have the induction
ceremony and we need volunteers to help us set-up for the induction.

If you want to join the set-up/decorations committee, please let me
know ASAP. You will earn 8 points for every hour devoted including the planning meetings.

Here is the meeting schedule:
10/16/06 – 10am @ Student Activities office. Also, we will be doing
decorations that day so bring your own scissors and small paint brush

Chocolate Donations: please drop it in the office
- Hershey’s nuggets (dark chocolate only, wrapped in black and gold)
- Hershey’s kisses ( with almonds only, wrapped in gold foil)

Points Agreement:
- 8 points – every hour spent in planning meetings, set-up for the
inductions, etc.
- 5 points – 3 bags of chocolate donations, any combinations

If you plan to join in the set-up/decorations committee, let me know.
We will also include your name on the power point presentation and
program list if you will volunteer.

Tanya, VP of Fellowship, will start to set-up decorations on 10/20 -
1PM Grand Conference Room.

Halloween Party Fundraiser

Thank you for being patient. Several of you have contacted me about
wanting to participate in this event.

The link is below. You have to enter your name and school email
address. They will then take you to the costume site. They will then
provide you a link to send to your friends and family so you can get
credit for your referals.

I would like to remind everyone that we are giving points to those
people who participate and/ or whose friends/ family purchase a
costume. The chapter receives 12% profits from each sale.

Also, I know that the company says you have to email 20 people in order
to participate. We ( this chapter) are not expecting that everyone do
that, nor are we saying that you can’t participate unless you forward
the link to at least 20 people. Obviously, we appreciate any and all
efforts that members put in to this fundraiser which is why we are
giving you a reward for participating.

Garage Sale Point Opportunities

Hey everyone! We are still in great need of donations (remember
clothes and books only!!) for the Garage Sale for our 6th Benefit Car
Show on Oct 22nd, from 9-3 in Parking lot 5. So everyone needs to
clean out their closets and get their bags into the office by FRIDAY
the 20TH!! Otherwise you may drop it off the day of the show.
Remember all proceeds go the American Cancer Society, and any leftovers
will be donated to the Salvation Army and a local shelter. This is a
great way to get rid of allllll the books and clothes that you don’t
use anymore!
Also, now each bag of clothes or books that you donate will give you 10
POINTS!!!! (instead of 5) with a new maximum of 50 POINTS!!!!!!!!

Halloween Campus Fundraiser

Hello everyone,

PTK has the opportunity to raise money through a program called Campus Fundraiser. They offer a bunch of different programs for campus groups who are wishing to raise money. The event we have chosen is a costume fundraiser. PTK will get 12% profits from every costume bought through an online costume company. They have some really great costumes that aren’t expensive. The money we raise will go towards PTK programs such as the Induction Ceremony, Halloween Party, Dinner for Darfur, etc.

Everyone who participates in this fundraiser will get points. You will also get points for any purchases made by your family and friends. Don’t forget we are having a PTK Halloween Party on Oct 27th! I need to know by this Friday at noon those people who want to participate in this fundraiser. Email me ASAP so I can send the link of the website along with the code to those persons wishing to help us out. If you have any questions, please email me.

Storm of the Century?

On Friday afternoon it looked like the Balloon Festival was going to be over before it began. I showed up around 2:45 to check out our digs. Almost immediately the rain and wind began ripping through the tent. All of us held onto one of the tent posts in the hopes that we could stop the tent from blowing away! We were successful in keeping the tent intact, but it appears that others weren’t quite as lucky. Both of the Margarita tents appeared to have been destroyed. I left the festival around four as it was clearing up. I hope that business improved as we had only sold about six sandwiches by the time I left. At least it’s nicer today!!!

Quik Chek Balloon Festival

Our chapter of PTK is going to be running a food booth for all three days of the QuickChek Balloon Festival held at Solberg Airport in Readington on July 28-30. The airport is located right off Readington Road. This is a chance for the chapter to make a lot of money since we earn 10 percent of whatever funds we bring in. I am hopeful that we will have enough members and officers to successfully man the booths.

I’ve never been to the festival before, but from what I hear there’s lots to do there. Peter Frampton, the 70′s rock legend (I remember him…do you?) will be performing in concert.

If you help out you’ll be able to gain entrance into the festival for free. The admission fee is $17.
